In the executive summary of Why Is It So Difficult for Racialized Immigrant Women to Get Promoted into Management? report, we estimated that racialized immigrant women comprised over 17% of the Toronto population. At the time of publication, we were not able to find the exact percentage. By using the following proxy statistics, we arrived at 17.4%. However, our calculations are conservative, and it’s likely that the actual percentage is higher.
Proxy stats
46.6% of Toronto residents are immigrants.
53.9% of immigrants in TO that identify as Women+.
Racialized groups accounted for 69.3% of the Canadian immigrant population in 2021, and the proportion is even higher among recent immigrants who were admitted since 2016 (83.0%).
Calculation
Step One
46.6% (% of TO population that are immigrants) * 53.9% (% of immigrants in TO that identify as Women+) =
25.1% of Toronto population that is Women + immigrants
Step Two
25.1% (Toronto population that is Women + immigrants) * 69.3% (% of Canadian immigrant population that is racialized [lower percentage, as post-2016 % is higher]) =
17.4% of the Toronto population is comprised of racialized immigrant women.
